TYPE OF GOVERNMENT:republic; has been divided de facto into two
autonomous areas since 1974 hostilities-one controlled by the Cyprus
Government or Greek area (60%) and the other administered by Turkish
Cypriots (35%); those areas are separated by a UN buffer zone and 2 UK
sovereign base areas (see UK SOVEREIGN BASE AREAS ON CYPRUS).

principally for local consumption-beverages, footwear, clothing, cement.
AGRICULTURE:potatoes and other vegetables, grapes, citrus fruits,
wheat, carob beans, olives.
EXPORTS:food and beverages (citrus, raisins, potatoes, wine), cement,
clothing. ($561.2 million).

1 Atlantic Ocean satellite antenna and 1 Indian Ocean antenna.

MISC:Cyprus was once a gift from Mark Anthony to Cleopatra. It is the
world's leading wine producer (per capita). Cyprus, the third largest
island in the Mediterranean, suffers from moderate earthquake activity
and water resource problems (due to seasonal disparity and no natural
reservoir catchments). The national symbol is the Mouflon (big horned
sheep). Cyprus became independent 6 August, 1960. Member of UN since
